VISUAL LITERACY: ARCHITECTURE – Term 3 Workpack 2

Visual Literacy: Architecture

The worksheet in this lesson plan is an excellent way to get young minds thinking about buildings and architecture. The teacher’s Memo that accompanies this worksheet will take the sting out of marking this work!

The logical steps towards understanding and appreciating buildings and architecture are presented. The questions have been formulated according to the guidelines suggested in the syllabus, using the specified weighting of Bloom’s taxonomy, a copy of which is included.

The worksheet is best complemented by these two PowerPoints:

  • Architecture Basics:  an overview of what architecture is and what materials can be used for construction. Different types of buildings are discussed, and the features that make them suitable for their intended purpose.
  • Art Elements and Design Principles – Buildings: this presentation explores how architects use art elements and design principles to create visually pleasing or memorable buildings. The same methodology of “fact, justify and opinion”, introduced in Term 2, is used to analyze two iconic buildings.

The third Powerpoint in this workpack will save you precious time because we’ve done the research for you!

  • The Role of Artists in Society: covers aspects such as how art records history and the world around us, and how social commentary is made through art. Remove the worry about discussing this complex topic in class with this helpful Powerpoint.
